Coughing is an uncomfortable symptom often experienced after an infection. So, how can we calm a persistent cough?

Understanding Why We Cough

Coughing is a natural reflex that occurs when something irritates your throat, such as dust or postnasal drip. It also helps clear your lungs and windpipe. However, frequent coughing can lead to inflammation of the cells lining the upper airways. While many coughs, like those from colds and flu, will resolve on their own, some may be linked to more serious medical conditions that require targeted treatment. Regardless of the cause, there are ways to alleviate the discomfort.

Effective Remedies for a Cough

  • Stay Hydrated: Drinking warm water is a simple yet effective remedy for soothing a cough. Keeping yourself hydrated, using a cool-mist humidifier, or a vaporizer can help calm an irritated throat and loosen mucus.

  • Honey Before Bed: Research shows that a spoonful of honey before bedtime can ease a cough. However, avoid giving honey to children under 12 months old.

  • Over-the-Counter Solutions: You might consider over-the-counter remedies that contain soothing ingredients like aloe or menthol.

  • Traditional Chinese Medicine: TCM emphasizes the therapeutic properties of food. For instance, pears and loquats are recommended for a ‘hot’ cough, while boiled brown sugar water with ginger is effective for a ‘cold’ cough. In Western medicine, it’s advised not to give cough and cold medications to children under 4 years old, but these food remedies may offer a gentle alternative.

Monitor Your Health

It’s important to monitor your body temperature at home. If your cough is accompanied by a fever or shortness of breath, seek medical advice promptly.

Prevention and Care

Studies increasingly show that viral infections are more prevalent in the winter. While coughs from colds and flu usually resolve on their own, it’s essential to keep warm and take preventative measures in your daily life to avoid these infections.
