What is Atrial Fibrillation (AFIB)?

Atrial Fibrillation (AFIB) is a common type of cardiac arrhythmia characterized by irregular and often rapid heartbeats. This irregular rhythm reduces the heart's efficiency in pumping blood, leading to potential blood clots in the atria. These clots can travel to the brain, causing strokes and other serious complications.

The Dangers of AFIB

AFIB is one of the most dangerous arrhythmias due to its association with severe health risks, including:

Increased Stroke Risk: Individuals with AFIB are about five times more likely to suffer a stroke compared to those without it, primarily due to the formation of clots in the atria.

Heart Failure: Prolonged AFIB can strain the heart, potentially leading to or exacerbating heart failure.

Cardiac Complications: The irregular heart rhythm can decrease overall heart efficiency, potentially triggering or worsening other heart conditions.

Types of AFIB

AFIB can be classified based on its duration and frequency:

Paroxysmal AFIB: This type of AFIB is intermittent, usually lasting less than 7 days, and often resolves on its own. Symptoms may range from mild discomfort to severe.

Persistent AFIB: Lasts more than 7 days and usually requires intervention such as medication or electrical cardioversion to return the heart to normal rhythm.

Long-standing Persistent AFIB: Persists for more than a year and typically requires more complex treatment approaches.

Permanent AFIB: This is when the arrhythmia is ongoing and unresponsive to treatment, requiring long-term management, often including anticoagulant therapy to reduce stroke risk.

Accuracy Metrics for AFIB Detection

The accuracy of AFIB detection is crucial for early diagnosis and prevention of complications. Key metrics include:

Sensitivity: The ability to correctly identify individuals with AFIB.

Specificity: The ability to correctly identify individuals without AFIB.

Positive Predictive Value (PPV): The proportion of individuals who test positive for AFIB and actually have the condition.

Negative Predictive Value (NPV): The proportion of individuals who test negative for AFIB and do not have the condition.

Joytech’s Patented AFIB Detection Algorithm

Joytech has developed a patented AFIB detection technology that effectively screens for the most dangerous and potentially fatal arrhythmia—atrial fibrillation—while excluding other arrhythmias caused by physiological and human factors. With Joytech's technology, AFIB can be automatically detected during blood pressure measurement. When users measure their blood pressure using the MAM (Microlife Average Mode) three-time average mode, if AFIB is detected, a symbol appears on the screen, prompting users to seek professional advice as soon as possible. This feature helps users better understand their health status and enables early detection and prevention of potential cardiac risks.
